Gimme gimme big kiss!

Megapuss - Surfing

Normally, the prospect of a neo-folk supergroup-unwashed, meandering, hypercurly-makes one stumble for medicinal marijuana to ward off the attendant nausea. But Surfing is hallucinogenic in all the right ways, as Megapuss (comprised of Devendra Banhart and Priestbird percussionist Greg Rogove) echo '60s psychedelic warriors like Love or the Zombies in fragile beauty and joy. Even when shambolic and sophomoric (the filthy Bo Diddley rip "A Gun On His Hip..."), it's like Donovan with dick jokes, which ain't half-bad, either. Throw in lowered expectations and a few fine fellows (Human Giant's Aziz Ansari on "Duck People Duck Man," Fabrizio Moretti from the Strokes on "Theme From Hollywood"), and Surfing becomes a genuinely fun and ebullient effort, a toss-off that's neither toss nor off.
