Sweating to the oldies, slowcore edition

[3.5/5]
True Widows' lumbering, somnambulant gait shimmers like road haze, gnawing the meat off mesmerizing grooves. It's reminiscent of slowcore and its dream-pop antecedents, with a sluggish, sultry, bluesy buzz that pools in a resident hum. Songs meander in a neo-psych drone, though former Slowride frontman Dan Phillips is more interested in flexing guitar muscle than unleashing waves of distortion; dynamic swells of noise are more often a threat then reality. The entire album gathers intensity as it moves along, climaxing with "Bleeder," a long-fuse number keyed by bassist Nicole Estill's willowy vocals against billowing sonic thunder boomers. Phillips' reedy croon haunts the slithering sound more frequently, but the trio's debut is mostly about the slowly advancing, foreboding menace that spends nearly an hour overtaking these 10 tracks.
