How did you get your start in acting?
I had always done community theater, and I had finally made the decision to pursue acting as a career, but I was only a few months into my new pursuit. A couple of weeks before they started casting The Foot Fist Way, I had gotten a local agent in North Carolina who agreed to send me out on film and TV auditions. He wasn't sure if I was ready for "real" auditions yet, so he said that he wanted to give me a test run with a couple of indie films that wouldn't be paid projects. I auditioned for The Foot Fist Way and Great World Of Sound around the same time and booked small parts in both.
So you always wanted to be an actress when you grew up?
Yes, but I didn't think it was a viable career option. My first gig was in elementary school. They had me play the Nutcracker in the school play because I had such a loud voice. I loved it. They put me in an old marching-band uniform with red lipstick circles on my cheeks, and people laughed when I was onstage. In high school, I had an acting teacher who was young and hip, and she taught me a lot about acting. But when I graduated from high school, I was overwhelmed at the thought of trying to make a living as an actress. Where does a person living in King George, Virginia, go to sign up for Hollywood actress jobs? So I decided I would go to school for psychology instead and just keep doing community theater for fun. When I was in graduate school for sociology, it hit me that I was wasting my life by playing it safe-and I was going be poor as a sociologist, too-so I might as well go for broke and be a waitress/actress.
Tell us about your character in Observe And Report.
My character's name is Nell. She works at a fast-food place in the mall and befriends Seth Rogen's character. She has kind of a sad life on the outside-her job sucks, her boss is mean to her, she has an injured leg and terrible fashion sense. But the thing about Nell is that she is always looking for the silver lining. I think that's how she ends up falling for Ronnie [Rogen]. She identifies with him because they are both trying to find out what their purpose is in life.
What music have you been into lately?
God, it's so tempting to lie and try to come up with something cool. I'm going to go with the truth: Deana Carter. I love country music.
What's up next for you?
Well, the last time someone interviewed me, they asked me that question, and I said I wanted to be in a romantic comedy. My part in Observe is funny and it's romantic. So I'm just going to put it out there into the universe that what's next for me is huge stardom, success beyond my wildest imagination and a plethora of roles to choose from. [Laughs.] For today, what's next is another audition to work on.
CHEAT SHEET >> After being sexually harassed by funnyman Danny McBride in THE FOOT FIST WAY, Collette Wolfe is ready to hold her own this month with Seth Rogan and Anna Faris in OBSERVE AND REPORT and Zac Efron and Matthew Perry in 17 AGAIN.
