Also Starring: Alison Pill

She may have gone from kid-friendly comedies like Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen to acting in off-Broadway plays, but don't get it twisted: ALISON PILL is no stuffy theater type. As it turns out, she's the kind of gal who won't think twice about sneaking a flask in to an awards show or hitting the dance floor with Steve Carell. This we've gotta hear...

So after Confessions came out, I'm guessing you got a ton of offers to play a cheerleader or a high-school senior.
No, not really. There might have been scripts that my agents just didn't bother sending to me. That may have been the situation [because] they knew I wouldn't be inclined to do them.

In the years that followed, you chose instead to work the theater circuit in New York. One of the plays you were in, The Lieutenant Of Inishmore, even earned you a Tony nomination. What was that like?
It was... Uh... fun? [Laughs.] They don't offer any beverages [at the Tony ceremony], so next time I think I'm going to be packing a flask. I went in there knowing I wouldn't win, so it wasn't that I was unappreciative; it was just a fun spectacle for me.

This month you return to the big screen with Dan In Real Life, which also stars Dane Cook and Steve Carell. What was it like to work with those two? Did they mostly sit around the set reading 19th-century literature?
Actually, Steve is really quiet and staid. He came out with us one night. We used to go to this blues club down the street from our hotel in Newport [Rhode Island] and he came out and did some dancing that was pretty great. [Laughs.] But other than that, he's just a family guy.

When you're not working, what do you listen to?
Well, right now, I've been listening to the new Tegan And Sara [album The Con] and things that are constantly in the mix are Bright Eyes and Joanna Newsom. Arcade Fire is also right up there, and the Weakerthans.

Really, the Weakerthans? Pretty much every actress we interview for this section says the White Stripes or Nelly Furtado. Nelly Furtado? No, I don't have any Nelly Furtado. [Laughs.] I hear enough of that on the radio! -Trevor Kelley

CHEAT SHEET >>
You might have first seen Pill starring alongside future Scientologist robot Katie Holmes in 2003's Pieces Of April. From there, Pill appeared alongside Lindsay Lohan in 2004's Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen and, this month, she plays Steve Carell's oldest daughter in the romantic comedy Dan In Real Life.
