CHRIS PRATT got his start on TV series' that were serious (Everwood) and not-so-serious (The O.C.), and his transition to the silver screen has been equally as schizophrenic--in a good way. We caught up with Pratt while he was in Boston shooting the romantic comedy Bride Wars--where he plays Anne Hathaway's fiance--to discuss the arty action flick Wanted, which comes out later this month. INTERVIEW: Jonah Bayer PHOTO: Neil Visel Before you got into acting, you were a door-to-door salesman. What were you selling, exactly? I was selling coupons, basically; coupons for oil changes. [Laughs.] It was very exciting stuff. Do you think you use any of those skills in your current career? Oh, totally. It taught me how to walk into a room full of strangers and sell myself, which is exactly what you do as an actor. A lot of actors in Hollywood talk about how they can't handle the rejection--and I know they wouldn't be able to handle being a door-to-door salesman because those people hate you so much, they'll call the cops or pull a gun on you. [Laughs.] I've never had anyone sic their dog on me in an audition yet. What's your character like in Wanted? I play a character named Barry who is best friends with James McAvoy's character, Wesley. I'm screwing Wesley's girlfriend behind his back, but Wesley knows about it. In the course of Wesley becoming a super assassin, he gets revenge on me by kicking my ass--so I play punching bag to Wesley in addition to being a bit of comic relief. Did you have any scenes with Angelina Jolie? Yeah, I had one scene with her. The second time [Wesley] kicks my ass, he hits me in the face with a door and Angelina Jolie walks in and steps over me, so that was our big scene together. [Laughs.] She walks into the room while I look up at her with blood all over my face. When you're not busy getting beat up, what kind of music are you into? I'm really into the new Gnarls Barkley [The Odd Couple]. When I try to explain what kind of music it is, I don't know what to call it--and I like that. I can't get enough of that song "Who's Gonna Save My Soul." I listened to it like 50 times in a row and couldn't figure it out. CHEAT SHEET Although he made a name for himself as Bright Abbott on the critically acclaimed TV series EVERWOOD and Ché on THE O.C., this month Chris Pratt takes on his most challenging role yet as James McAvoy's personal punching bag in the new Angelina Jolie action romp, WANTED. |
