That's Not How The Song Goes

Apparently not everyone is a fan of Katy Perry's cherry-chapstick-red hot single, "I Kissed A Girl."

A church in suburban Ohio actually put up a sign that says "I kissed a girl and I liked it. Then I went to hell," according to a story by the Associated Press on Channel 5's website today.

Holy homophobia, Batman.

Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, but this seems extreme to me. If that is the opinion of that particular congregation, fine. I might not agree with them, but if that's the kind of message they want to spread inside their church, fine. True, Katy Perry's song is played publicly, but if they don't want to hear it all they have to do is turn off the radio or turn the channel.

The pastor of that church is quoted in the article as saying that the sign is "loving warning" to teens. Wow. Maybe English isn't his first language, because from my understanding, the word "loving" is not synonymous with "condemning."

I guess I shouldn't be that shocked, but I am. I mean, the idea that a church would spread such a hateful, judgmental message just leaves me baffled. If that church is so concerned with spreading a Biblical message, why not the many, many passages about love -- or better yet, Judge not lest ye be judged...

And that's all I'm sayin' about that.

wow, I feel like some sort of antagonist today against the "LIBERAL ELITE MEDIA" that is Alt-Press (Just kidding about that, well the liberal part, you guys are Elite media, or as they say on the interblag, L337 media) But there are direct quotes from the Bible condemning homosexuality. True Jesus never says them (an interesting point I ALWAYS bring up in debate) but it says it.

now I don't agree with the sign, but if they play I kissed a Girl on the radio then their sign is free to hang. They could say "Gerard Way is the Anti-Christ" and I wouldn't care. I'd laugh and know that I won't be attending that Church on Sunday. What the church wants is to get people into heaven, and they feel that if your gay you won't go to heaven. Interesting to think that fundamentalists do all that they do just so you can go to their heaven. Their methods may be putoffish, but they want complete strangers to share with them in the afterlife, something many other religions don't do.

In summary, Church sign=free speech
Jesus=loves EVERYONE (even gays)
Me=really bored with insomnia
katy Perry=taken by Travis, DAMN

You make a good point, kapy53. I was so shocked by the message this church was spreading, I let it overshadow the fact that when it comes down to it, free speech is one of the most vital rights that we have and I would never want to censor anyone.

That said, we all have the responsibility to use and not abuse our rights. Something so judgmental still feels like an abuse of that right, but it's their right nonetheless.

Thanks for keeping me on my toes!

Funny thought: when read out of context this sign - which to be honest any church sign is usually such a stinking corny attempt at being clever it makes me ill - could be interpreted as condemning kissing any girl - whether it's a guy or a girl doing the kissing. ah ah ah. This to say that taking anything out of context is a dangerous business, whether that's Bible quotes or political speeches, which we've been seeing plenty of lately.

In response to kapy53, some of us believers have a tendency to forget love and compassion - mercy triumphs over judgment - and we'd all do a whole lot better to extend a hand to shake rather than slap.

Sarah, you hit it on the ball completley. On my campus (Penn State) we have a guy who hoots and hollers at kids that their going to hell and saying Jesus hates them for doing certain things. I just get so upset that someone like this claims to love the same God I do.

And I also realised that about the sign....now if only there was a girl for me to kiss....
