Why Is It?

When more and more musicians are living like this:

Great blog. Sometimes I don't understand why I care to purchase all of my music and it's nice to be reminded of why I do once in a while.

Yup, I agree wholeheartedly with this. Unfortunately, I am far too poor to buy all of the music I love, but I do try to support my favorite bands as much as I can.

I'm in complete agreement with you here.
If you are a fan SUPPORT THE BAND BY BUYING THEIR MUSIC AND MERCH! It only hurts them in the end if you don't.

Humans can be destructuively greedy, we'd download souls for free if we could (which in a way is happening), I've never illegaly downloaded in my short life, it's the only moral I have.

This just straight up annoys me considering that the artists/talent are the only reason that the executives are making their money. Yet they treat them like garbage and take all of the money, and people who download, the majority of whom are fans of whatever they are downloading, are only hurting there favorite artists. Times are tough sure, but save all your change every month, and at the end of every month you should have at least fifteen dollars, and go out and buy the physical product, the cd as it were, that is fading oh so quickly. HELL, even buy it digitally off of itunes or STRAIGHT up from the artist off of their myspaces. Save the music, save the art, don't be greedy. As for the executives, there isn't anything you can, they rule over everyone else, and that's how it will be and always has been.

As a current music business student, this is exactly what our professor is trying to teach us. I agree 100%, and fans just don't realize where their money truly goes.

I just wrote an essay for my English folio on that exact topic. In my essay, I obviously went more indepth, but it can be broken down into this:

Stealing music is basically stealing some musician's rent money, or their dinner that night. Why do people think that it's more acceptable to steal music, than it is to pirate DVDs?

I agree with this post 100 percent. I have many friends ask me why i purchase my music. I like to think that my money goes to these talented musicians that work so hard. It is true that most bands do not see half of what they should see. It is also a shame that they pour their heart and soul into their music and people illegally download it or do not get an equal share from the record label. This brings up another great reason I love these bands, they keep going out of love for the music. As ridiculous as it is, it is true that most of these musicians do not make an insane amount of money and drive fancy cars. They are real people who work hard for what they love. I have a great amount of respect for these talented musicians and I try to support them in any way possible, whether it be purchasing their music or band merchandise. The music business can be a deceiving and tricky one. Supporting your favorite band is the best way to show your love for them and their music. So slap on a band tee and listen to your favorite album and know that you are a supporter of the bands and music you love!

I love this. And it's true. Listening to your podcast I've learnt a lot more about the industry than I used to. And while I'll admit to downloading music in the past, I'm wanting to get away from that scene entirely. I know it would be a massive pain, but if they just locked down all their CDs or DRM it like itunes does maybe that would help?
