I count at least five singles
So, if ragging on the other editors is the new trend in AP blogging, then I'd just like to point out the glaring error in Scott's latest blog.
In the entry, he is giving Tim shit for crediting a Barenaked Ladies line to the Beastie Boys. Okay, Tim was wrong. And it was funny. But then Scott referred to BNL as "one-hit wonders."
Um, one hit? Really?
The song in question was "One Week," but the band are also very well known for "Old Apartment," "Pinch Me," "If I Had A Million Dollars" and "Brian Wilson." That's at least five right there.
Plus, the band have won/been nominated for the following awards:
"One Week" won the Billboard Music Awards trophies for Best Clip (Alternative/Modern Rock) and Maximum Vision.
"One Week" was nominated for a Grammy in 1999, and "Pinch Me" was nominated for the same category in 2001. "One Week" was also nominated for an MTV VMA.
Collectively, the band have been nominated for nine Juno Awards, winning six of them.
In 2000, BNL took home the statue for World's Best Selling Canadian Band at the World Music Awards.
So, maybe they're Canadian. But I still think they're far more than one-hit wonders. I may be biased based on the amount of times I heard Rock Spectacle coming from my roommates' speakers in college, but I'm still gonna go out on a limb and call out Scott.
I'm sure his next entry will be dedicated to my faults, and I'm fine with that.

Awards do not hits make. BNL have only had two songs ever crack the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, and those songs were "One Week" (which made it all the way to No. 1) and "Pinch Me," which made it as high as 15 in 2000. They've had a handful of other songs that have shown up in the gutters of various Billboard charts, but those are the only two songs to actually catch on with the public.
I'd be very, very hesitant to even label "Pinch Me" as a hit, because I bet eight years after the fact, you couldn't recite the rap from its verses (unlike "One Week"). That's right, the band -- who had never rapped before "One Week" -- purposely rapped on their next album's first single to try and capitalize on their success.
As far as pop culture is concerned, the Barenaked Ladies are total one-hit wonders. Did they write some catchy songs? Sure, but so did Harvey Danger and Semisonic -- two bands I both adore, but who are also total one-hit wonders.
Face the facts, Lux.
I still remember hearing the live version of Million Dollars all the time on the radio. Plus who cares if they rapped, it was pretty clever rapping. Kinda like the stuff weird Al does nowadays....who only has one top ten single.....plus they are only a one hit wonder in America, I bet in Canada they're the biggest shit since Our Lady Peace.
I'm with Rachel on this one. Scott for the lose.
who cares how many it sold, PINCH ME RULES.
also, ouch...looks like alex for the "loss"
Sorry to be the Devil's Advocate, but Milli Vanilli won a Grammy back in the day, so I'd hesitate to use awards as an argument ;)
Dear Kendall-
The reason I know the lyrics to "One Week" is because of the number of times the album was played in or around cross country practice, courtesy of you and Daivd. I thought you'd stick up for your boys. :)

Dear, Scott-
Also, even if BNL didn't have a lot of "Top 40" hits, I think there's something to be said for longevity--something other "one hit wonders" from that era (Sister Hazel, Savage Garden) didn't have. So I really don't think we can put them in that category.

Dear Rachel -
Untrue - I never would play "One Week". We DID listen to Rock Spectacle constantly, which was a great record ("When I Fall" and "Straw Hat & Old Dirty Hank" are favorites). I was also a fan of Gordon and Born on a Pirate Ship. However, the release of Stunt, which contained "One Week", was the moment I started disliking BNL. Probably because that song was impossible to escape, as well as most BNL songs that came afterward. So I guess you must have been thinking about your OTHER cross country team ;)
