It's my blog to keep punk rock elite.

I'm working on the 10 Essential for our issue out in December, and like last year's, it is focused around 10 essential records by bands who broke up this year. One record I wanted to feature was by a very shortlived band who never even had their own website and was put out posthumously on vinyl only very recently. I think the record is quite good, and the band's pedigree was one that I felt like many of our readers would care about, so I chose to make the album one of the 10. I gave Ted, our art associate, the label's e-mail address so he could request album artwork of a high enough resolution for print, and this is what he received in return yesterday morning:

hi ted,

not sure if you're the right person to email about this, but here goes:

i guess you guys can do whatever you want, freedom of the press and all that, but i would really appreciate if you kept [band name withheld] and [record label name withheld] out of your magazine.

i dont feel comfortable being at all associated with whatever AP's version of "punk" is, and frankly your magazine makes me want to puke. you know, cell phone ads, christian businessmen on your covers, no politics - it's just gross and all very career oriented. how do you even have a copy for review? i sure as hell didn't send you one.

sorry,

-[name withheld]

Maybe it was the cold medicine taking effect (I've felt like various stages of ass all week long), but I absolutely lost it and replied with a near-1,000-word essay/dismantling of his paper-thin (and very petty) attacks. I haven't heard back from the guy yet, and I highly doubt I will, because punk-rock bullies are like every other strain of bullies in the world: Once you confront them and call them on their shit, they generally seep back into the swamp where their parents birthed them.

Anyway, since I'm obviously not punk enough to write about that guy's band, this means I have a spot open in next month's 10 Essential; tell me what was the worst band breakup for you this year -- and which one of their albums was your favorite -- in the comments below. In case you forgot just who called it quits over the past 365, you can find pretty up-to-date lists here, here and here, or you can use our search engine to see what's in our news archives (I recommend searching for "break up" -- just a hint).

Personally, I was really bummed that Be Your Own Pet broke up. 'Get Awkward' was a great album...

does the starting line's indefinite hiatus count?

I wouldn't necessarily say they broke up this year (since they have been inactive for a while), but the end of Gatsbys American Dream feels official this year since so many offshoots of the band released things this year (Kay Kay, Wild Orchid Children, Search/Rescue).

I still think Volcano is a fantastic album and would be a good fit to your list, as long as the meet your criteria for "broken up"

The Receiving End of Sirens. I think they were easily one of the strongest and one of the most creative bands the scene had going for it.

If I had to choose between their two full-lengths they released I would have to pick "The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi" They showed a lot of progression in that album while also retaining what they had on "Between the Heart and the Synapse"

Definitely not LaGrecia. That's one of the albums I am writing about, actually.

And Amanda, the Starting Line totally counts, if you ask me.

Although I agree with captainmonbon about Be Your Own Pet, I have to go with Reuben.

While I love the rawness of Racecar Is Racecar Backwards, it is very much a first album. And while their latest, In Nothing We Trust, is a great album, it didn't do for me what their second album, Very Fast Very Dangerous, did. VFVD is raw without sounding amateur. The song titles, and accompanying lyrical content, is nothing short of phenomenal. It's definitely my favorite...but picking a favorite Reuben album is like choosing between three great ice cream flavors. No matter what you choose, you get a delicious treat!

p.s. Punk is not a fucking pedigree. (It would be hilarious to read some of your rant to Mr. PunkRock Elite.) Either way, hope you feel better soon.

by the way, making queer similies about music and ice cream is so punk rock.

I am still bummed that Moros Eros broke up. I know they're moving on to better things, but they had such an absurd amount of talent and actually sounded fresh and new, even though you could tell their influences pretty easily.

The Ergs also deserve a spot because they were fun as hell.

Blink 182's final word was traumatizing, especially in how it was worded by Tom...something along the lines of "For a bunch of diplomatic and political reasons, we called it whatever back in the day, but it was a breakup. I've moved on. I believe that now I've found a place in my life where I'm happier than I've ever been and I'm with the best people I've ever been with and I'm making the best music and art I've ever made" but you know im not direct quoting or anything.

But the most essential blink album-Enema of the State

I feel like there was another one but I can't seem to remember.

Amanda Palmer squashed that breakup rumor about the Dresden Dolls, I think it was on her blog. They're just taking time off, she says they are absolutely not broken up.

I'm surprised you would essentially cave in to the guy. Seems like the best thing to do would be to write about the release anyway and if the person doesn't care for, fuck em.
