Settle an argument.
Music editor Scott Heisel is never wrong.
(In the world that exists outside of Scott's head, however, he very often is.)
Here's a typical exchange:
Scott: "What's your favorite Weezer song?"
Anyone: "Hmm. I think it's probably 'Hash Pipe'"
Scott: Wrong! Your favorite song is 'Across The Sea!'
Anyone: "That's weird. I coulda sworn it was 'Hash Pipe.' My cousin put it on a mix CD for me when I was in the hospital and I listened to it every day."
Scott: "Nope!"
So when unwittingly entering into an argument with Scott about almost anything, you need rigid, scientific facts (or survey results) to back it up.
So, real quick: Settle this argument.
I won't tell you which side I'm on.
Yet.
Listen to these two songs.
One is by the band Toadies.
The other is by Every Time I Die.
Does the Toadies song sound a little like a less angry version of ETID?
TOADIES
It should, however, be noted that Scott had to help me upload these songs.

I can sorta hear a resemblance.
they sorta do sound like a less angry version of ETID.
but i'll bet that keith buckley is still hotter than the other singer.
A slight resemblance at best.
Eh, it kind of does sound the same. But, not. I don't know.
The Toadies have a better name. I sort of imagine them all hardcore except with those massive red and white spotty things on their heads like Toad from Mario Kart. Wow, I'm gonna get a lot of satisfaction out of that mental image.
I suppose one could argue that they sound a little alike, but likely because both songs carry the same timing and chord progression. In other words, I refuse to acknowledge that a band as lame as Every Time I Die is even in the same league as The Toadies.
(also, it needs to be noted that I am seeing The Toadies in Austin next month along with Riverboat Gamblers. WIN)
There's a similarity, but I don't think the Toadies song is a less angry version of the ETID song. They just kind of sound the same.
If you want to make a comparison, it might be best to say that ETID did a song slightly more in-your-face/angrier than "Backslider." But they do have a similar "swing." I think coma girl got it right!
