GEAR PROBLEMS? ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS AXE

Evan Smith is a magician. Well, sort of. The former guitarist for Amity (featured in AP's 100 Bands You Need To Know In '06) is now the Axe Smith on Warped Tour. Sponsored by Guitar Center, Smith acts as an on-call service tech for bands on Warped Tour, fixing guitars and basses for anyone who needs it. And the best part is, the program is provided totally free of charge.
"We can [help] anybody who does something stupid to their guitar. Or the weather does something stupid to it. Or the kids do something stupid to it," says Smith, jokingly. "I've definitely had more than one occasion where people tried to do the guitar spins on stage. A strap lock comes out, and the guitar just goes flying." When he's not on Warped, Smith techs for various bands on tour, so he's got plenty of experience in the field. Despite his extensive knowledge, there are always new challenges. "[It's difficult] when someone brings me something that I haven't seen before, or something where they have no clue what the problem is, and it's something that takes awhile to figure out," he says. "Maybe it's something really subtle, so I have to go piece by piece through the guitar to try and figure out where the problem's coming from."
For Smith though, it's worth it in the end to help out bands and have his personal, "Hell yeah!" moments. He recalls one time when Kim Nekroman of the HorrorPops brought him a guitar that simply wouldn't work when plugged in. "I saw that one of the wires for the signal had come off from the toggle switch, all the way at the top to all the way at the bottom. So it was kind of like a surgical procedure. But yeah, I pulled it off and I was pretty excited about it."
If there's one piece of advice Smith would like to impart to guitarists it's this: Keep your bodily fluids at bay.
"Wipe the sweat off [your guitar] ASAP. If you don't, your guitar will rust. All the metal parts will rust, and it will look disgusting," warns Smith. "I see so many guitars that come into me where people have been sweating all over them. Dirt, grime, sweat, who knows what else. Snot that turns brown and crusty. It gets pretty gross."
