AP: Is the experience of doing Warped significantly different when you're just in a van, doing your own thing and driving gig to gig?
MASCHERINO: It's different from everything. I handle it completely different than I would any other tour because it's so hard. It's never the same day. You're playing at different times everyday. That's one of the hardest things, because you could play at 7:30 one night, and then afterward, be totally excited about the show and hang out till 3 a.m. partying and everything, and your tour manager knocks on your bunk at 11 a.m. the next day and says "You're on in 30 minutes, get the hell up."
BRANDAN: Bummer!
MASCHERINO: It's just happened so many times. Then when you play that early, you're bored the rest of the... Not bored, because you're hanging out, but it's like, "I'm done!" and it's freaking 1 p.m. It's like, "Let's just hang out all day," and hope you go on early the next day. That's definitely one of those things about festival tours: It's 20, 25, 30 minutes of playing, and then 23-and-a-half-hours of nothing.
I guess the way to do that is to make friends in every city. Then when it's, "Dude, our set's done, let's go," and go for a local road trip.
MASCHERINO: Well, yeah, if you could only plan it, you know? Your friends are like, "What time should I come tomorrow?" and you're like, "I don't know, I might be on at noon, I might be on at four, I don't know." The fact that you can't get into a routine is, I think, one of the hardest things.
Do you think that the Warped crowds are different? Do you think that maybe a Color Fred or a Norma Jean fan is probably really cool at the small club on a bad side of town, and then when he or she comes to Warped, [the fans are] like, "Well, it's about fucking time!" and doing lots of whining and complaining? Do you think fans at Warped turn into grumpy-assed people who are all of a sudden demanding things from you?
MASCHERINO: We've definitely seen that in other festival tours we've done. Like, that's what people do that year, they get tickets to that festival. They're going to go to [the tour location], and they're not going to wear a shirt all day, you know? [Laughs.] That's their mood, you know?
BRANDAN: That makes them very different from the people that go every single week to two or three shows. I think the people that come are different in every city. I notice that all the time, that it's like a different world in every city. Every city is different. ALT
