Rise Against - Answered by Tim
Is there any Warped moment that you would want to revisit? We played in Calgary, in the middle of a raceway, and we were the last band on the stage and for a few hours before the show, we were being told that there was a storm coming and we may have to cancel. Our set time came, and the clouds rolled in, but not before we started playing. The wind picked up , and when we got to the song "Dancing For Rain", it started pouring like a motherfucker, and nobody cared. Lots of the tour went running for cover but we kept playing as they tried to cover our gear in tarps and our fans kept singing and dancing as the dirt turned into a sea of mud. It felt like the end of the world.
What are your thoughts the presidential election...a bleak light of hope or just another step towards the New World Order?
I don't think any of the candidates can offer absolute solutions. I think that we as a people rely on the White House too much for change, and not enough on themselves and their community. But I think Obama sets a progressive precedent that could perhaps bring our country one small step closer to what it could be.
What has been the best state you have preformed in?
State? Well, I guess in terms of the amount of amazing shows we've had in one state, it would have to be California, considering the intensity of our shows in places like Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. But let's not leave provinces out of this (I'm looking at you, British Columbia!)... -
If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be? If it were then turned into a movie, what actor would you want to play you?
It would be called "How To Not Work A Real Job Ror Eight Years" and I'd be played by the dude from that TV show House. John C Riley, wearing big boots to make him taller, would play Barnes, the drummer of At The Drive In would play Joe, and Micheal Stipe would play Zach.
In the American political landscape of today (and the near future), how can someone who relates to and supports punk ideals successfully run for political office and still uphold those same fundamental ideals once seated?
Our political system is a very flawed institution in my opinion, and viable candidates seem to share only a few things in common, including being wealthy and having the ability to lie. I think it could be a long time before punk ideals get a fair chance in the game of politics, but I have faith that one day they will . Punks and all Americans need to stop relying on the White House as a source of change and realize that change might just a matter of deciding that your fate is yours alone to control.
Ski or snowboard?
Skate. (Chicago's not known for its ski season)
When did you decide to become vegetarians and why?
I've been vegetarian since I was about 17. I went for two main reasons, the animals and the environment. I don't think animals are here for our consumption and the industry around their consumption is corrupt and the biggest contributor to global pollution (more so than even the entire transportation industry). Going vegetarian is the single most effective decision one can make to reduce your carbon imprint, even if you skip meat one meal a week it helps (try it !).
Health is another reason: a veg diet is so much healthier than a meat-eating diet, and cuts your risk of heart disease in half. Though I must admit I always prefer onion rings to salads, so I can't claim that one!
Who chose the Guitar Hero 3 song: you or the makers?
They asked for that song, and it happened to be one of our favs as well.
Is the new CD gonna sound like Siren Song, Sufferer, or something TOTALLY INSANE AND NEW!?
Ironically enough, the title of the new CD is "TOTALLY INSANE AND NEW" !
What's been on your playlist while on the road?
Cavelera Conspiracy, Fugazi, Iron & Wine, Shades Apart.
Can you beat "Prayer Of The Refugee" on expert on GH3? I mean, it is your song.
No! I can barely beat it on medium, though I only played it once. Guitar players will tell you that the game is often harder than actually playing, and I agree. Or I just suck.
You guys are a very political band and make your stance on many issues known. With this being an election year, what are your thoughts and feelings about the candidates, the issues at hand, and the race overall?
It's encouraging to see that our needless involvement in the civil war in Iraq, a civil war that America ignited, is being talked about. The shame that the Bush administration has brought upon the nation is finally being addressed, and it seems that people are really listening and ready to be proud of where they live again.
Around when will the next cd be released?
Hopefully fall of 2008, though we don't have an exact date yet.
What do each of the members of Rise Against think about the issues of the potential presidential candidates?
I'm excited to see a candidate like Obama in the mix. He's the first person that doesn't represent the "business as usual" role that many candidates seem to embody.
Did you guys always want to be musicians and if not what did you want to be?
I went to school as an English major and Sociology minor, and I always saw myself writing in some capacity, or perhaps teaching. I also love the outdoors, so maybe something in that direction.
Whats your favorite venue to play and why?
I love the Metro in Chicago. Combined with the fact that I used to go see some of my favorite bands there, it really is a classy venue. But the Norva in Norfolk has a hot tub backstage...so....
What are some bands that influenced you to start making music?
Fugazi, Black Flag, Descendents, Jawbreaker, Pegboy, Minor Threat.
I heard something about you guys trashing a pool a few years ago at Warped Tour. What was that all about?
It's a long story, but we are innocent! Innocent, I tell you! The lane line broke itself! We were just trying to get the little plastic discs out of the water....at a rapid and dangerous velocity and in the direction of a vending machine and innocent passersby...but I digress..."
How do you feel about fuzzy pink pants?
They look good on you...
What does the heart fist logo represent for you guys?
The fist has always been a symbol of rebellion or revolution. The heart reminds you that love, not violence, is at the center of those inclinations. That's how I see it at least, but it's for everyone to interpret on their own.
What's your favorite thing about the Vans Warped Tour?
The community. You end up spending a whole summer with people, and spending lots of time with them. You share BBQs and parking lots everyday, you make lots of friends. It's really a lot of fun, I can't wait to get back.
What's your favorite pizza topping? (we can't decide what to order, haha)
Green pepers, mushrooms, onions...mmm....
What is your biggest fear?
I hope that the generations that come after us are able to enjoy the quality of life that the previous generations have enjoyed. I fear that may not happen sometimes.
Do you have any tips or pointers for people that are starting a band?
Do it because you love it, because you have an idea you want to convey, because you feel like you can add something to what's out there, because you think what's out there sucks and you can do it better. Do it because you feel it in your blood, not because you want to sell shirts, have fans, buy a cool guitar, get famous, make money or anything else like that. Don't be afraid to find your own voice.
What was it like playing the Metro in Chicago with Alkaline Trio?
Anytime you're playing Metro it's awesome, and anytime you're playing with Alk3 it's awesome. So double awesome.
