A BAND'S BEST FRIEND ON WARPED TOUR

When you're a band traveling 100-plus miles per night in a bus or van on Warped Tour, it's not always easy to find a wireless signal. It can be downright frustrating. Guitar Center understands your pain. Implemented three years ago as a means to ease the troubles of internet-deprived musicians, Guitar Center's Warped Tour Web Lab is a mobile, air-conditioned environment that provides Mac computers for bands to check e-mails, print flyers and-most importantly-change their MySpace mood.

"It's kind of like the business center that serves the bands, their managers and some production staff," says Nathan Eldridge, promotions coordinator for Guitar Center and head of activation for the Web Lab. "People come here whether it be to check their MySpace, pay their bills, print their sound scans, print set lists, flyers for the Mustache Bash. It's the one place you can come and cool out, maybe listen to some music, do your thing and just forget about the tour for 20 minutes, half an hour."

This year, the Lab has been running a fairly smooth operation. When the program was first starting out though, it wasn't always easy. "For the most part, we were always able to fix things. If we lost signal for half an hour, we had great tech support and were back online," Eldridge recalls. "And the cool thing was, people understood what we were doing for them, so they were patient, and they let us figure that stuff out."

"[This year], the most nerve-wracking [moment we've had], [was] when we had a fuel injector go down in our truck. And it was like, ‘We've got to get a replacement truck, we've got to get to the venue,' and this is all [happening at] four in the morning," says Eldridge, laughing. "But we made it happen. We got a rental truck, we had a replacement and we made it from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Virginia Beach. We were at the venue a little late, so we stayed open late and made sure everyone got the things that they needed and got taken care of." Now that's some serious dedication. But is all this free service (and occasional aggravation) worth it for Guitar Center?

"I think it's one of our strongest support mechanisms for musicians," says Eldridge. "For us to be able to help all of them in some way or another is great. The fact that we [are] online, we provide our services, and we do it through the whole tour [is] a huge accomplishment for us."
