Songs to pwn ass at HALO 3 with
Alternative Press - Editorial Intern on 1/28/09 @ 12:47 PM - altpress.comSelected by Casey Lynch
Even though shredding on fake plastic guitars is all the rage in gaming these days, most gamers out there have heard of a little thing called Halo 3. Still the most-played multiplayer game on Xbox LIVE, we'd wager that almost all of you have either played or watched someone play Bungie's premiere first-person shooter. Just in case you music-obsessed peeps haven't ever taken your Battle Rifle and sticky grenades onto the battlefield with war music blaring, here's a list of crucial songs (and the gametypes and maps to crank them up on) to git 1337 on some noob ass!
-
A WILHELM SCREAM "Cancer Dream" (from Ruiner) (NITRO,2005)
Popcorn Rockets on Guardian
Popcorn is an old custom game variant from Halo 2 that was literally a blast on Midship-set up a “King Of The Hill” objective game with a stationary hill, quick respawns and all weapons set to Rockets, and watch the bodies (or “popcorn”) start flying. Guitarists Trevor Reilly’s and Christopher Levesque’s ass-tearing riffage perfectly matches the clusterfuck tone of this game. Respawning every few seconds won’t matter when you’re scoring Killtaculars and Killimanjaros with only one or two Rockets. -
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME "Selkies (The Endless Obsession)" (from Alaska) (VICTORY,2005)
Team Slayer on Blackout A remake of Lockout, the undisputed best close-quarters Slayer map from Halo 2, by now you should know every weapon spawn, jump and choke point, making this a fragtacular slaughter waiting to happen. “Selkies” serves two purposes on Blackout: The first four caustic minutes will lead you to victory, with the moodier instrumental postscript serving as comedown music as you re-play your Killtrocities in gory detail over and over again.
-
DEFTONES "Lhabia" (from Around The Fur) (MAVERICK,1998)
Team Dual on Avalanche
The chilling and foreboding “Lhabia” dovetails perfectly with the frozen setting of Avalanche and the “I can see you” nature of Team Dual, a variant that allows the team with the least kills to see icons that give away the location of the opposition. The weapons feel designed for a Deftones soundtrack; lining up a Splaser on a Warthog with Chino Moreno curdling sweet nothings into your ear = WIN. -
MASTODON “Blood And Thunder” (from Leviathan) (RELAPSE,2004)
Team Slayer on High Ground
It’s hard to find a song with a beefier adrenaline-pumping intro than “Blood And Thunder,” which will have your trigger finger ready for carnage regardless of whether you spawn in the base or beachside. We prefer beach spawn; you’re a few crouch-jumps away from Snipes and can line up a shot on the jerk inevitably headed to Spartan Laser tower right as Troy Sanders hollers, “I think that someone’s trying to kill me.” Troy ain’t kidding, so lock and load. -
MEGADETH "Take No Prisoners" (from Rust In Peace) (CAPITOL,1990)
Team SWAT on Cold Storage
Moderately old-school thrash metal matched with a hyper-faithful remake of the old-school Halo favorite, Chill Out? Hell yes! If you haven’t played SWAT, it’s a one headshot insta-kill bloodbath. The manic riff stitching most of the song together, combined with Dave Mustaine growling, “Take no prisoners/take no shit,” will keep your blood pumping and your reflexes sharp throughout what will prove to be a quick and dirty match (as most good SWAT games usually are). -
PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS "One Fucked Pony" (from Mercy) (ABACUS,2006)
Team BRs on Last Resort
That’s exactly what the competition will be when you’re fueled by Gared O’Donnell’s sea-lion roar. All those hours you played ripping across Zanzibar in Halo 2 will become like lightning coursing through your veins as “One Fucked Pony,” with its crushing midtempo groove and splintered guitar stabs, rattles through your living room over your parents’ surround sound (don’t forget to keep your headset on to hear the in-game action!). -
REFUSED "The Shape Of Punk To Come" (from The Shape Of Punk To Come) (BURNING HEART,1998)
Team Snipers on Valhalla
The rolling slow-boil intro will give you enough time to grab two Stickies and hit the Man Cannon to get set up mid-field at Spartan Laser. By the time Dennis Lyxzén’s vocal cord-ripping chorus kicks in, you’ll be working on your second Sniper Spree medal. For shenanigans and Refused-flavored anarchy, jump on the Mongoose with a teammate and see how long you can survive doing donuts in the open around the antennae turretside no-scoping bitches. -
THE SWORD "Lords" (from Gods Of The Earth) (KEMADO,2008)
Team Swords Multi-Team on Epitaph
Prepare to raise the chalice of WIN high in the sky; with sword in hand, you can’t lose listening to the Sword. Of course, playing a game with four teams of two, all armed with Halo 3’s Covie Energy Sword, across Narrow’s vertigo inducing, chasm-spanning walkway, is already a recipe for butchery. With the squealing metal pounding in your head, your weapon will become like He-Man’s, Lion-O’s and Thundarr The Barbarian’s all wrapped into one-making you a badass Spartan-skewering machine. -
TEN FOOT POLE "My Wall" (from Rev) (EPITAPH,1994)
Juggernaut on Epitaph
There’s nothing like “My Wall” to take you back to the mid-'90s in a flash, especially when accompanied by a game on the map bearing the band's former label’s name in a variant where it’s every player against one invisible, hyper-fast, hyper-powerful jerk with a Gravity Hammer. Feel free to use the lyrics to help that noob with zero kills on your team: “Open your eyes! You're fighting kids.” -
TIGER ARMY "Afterworld" (from Music From Regions Beyond) (HELLCAT,2007)
Infection on Snowbound
Infection pits one zombie (a player with reduced gravity and no shields) against 12 other humans until there’s only one standing. Not only is the tempo of “Afterworld” ass-kicking, but we couldn’t think of a better song to see us into the afterlife. That, and there are usually 13 players in Infection, which always reminds us of Nick 13.

Even though it's for Halo 3, I think "Headshot," by Mychildren Mybride should be on here. Excellent choices though!
