My first issue of Alarm “magazine” came in the mail today. I say “magazine” because this thing is a fucking book, and it was mailed media mail. I can’t wait to dig into it tonight. I read some digital articles on their website in the past, but I was never able to find it at a Borders or Barnes & Noble. They cover a wide variety of music (recent covers had William Elliott Whitmore and Converge, for an idea of range). Unfortunately it is only quarterly, but you can’t have everything…
I also occasionally pick up a copy of Outburn or Filter if the cover catches my eye.
I recently subscribed to Classic Rock, Classic Rock Prog and Metal Hammer.
The newest issue of Classic Rock has a Gaslight Anthem article in it. I was stoked to read that.
I’ve already found a ton of stellar bands from these magazines that I had never heard of. Plus they always come with free cds and such.
European magazines > North American.
When I first started the graphic design program, I heard about these amazing things called magazines that I was really interested in doing work for when I graduated. Now it seems like they were just mythical entities my professors were making up.
I weep because in less than four years, the career path I chose seems to be obsolete almost. Unemployed graphic designer seems to be the norm in the industry these days. I sometimes sit next to my degree and stare at it while I down as much booze as I can handle and cry softly. Art school is a waste of money.
^ While my humor is incredibly dry and self-aware the saddest part about all of what I said (even if the intention was somewhat humorous) is it’s all fucking true.
Shit’s getting to the point these days where your degree is essentially worthless unless you go to grad school, but that’s a rant better left for a different section of the boards. I won’t derail this thread further with my sad clownness.
