#242.2 – April 2010

NOISE ON THE SIDE 2008 FEATURING ANTHONY GREEN AND CRAIG OWENS
Because being in just one band doesn’t seem to be enough these days, we decided to explore the outpouring of creativity from some of our favorite rockers. We started with Circa Survive frontman Anthony Green’s acoustic solo disc, then moved on to the decidedly pop offering from Chiodos’ screamer Craig Owens’ band, Cinematic Sunrise. We also checked in with band-juggling members of My Chemical Romance, As I Lay Dying, Saves The Day and more.

FEATURES
HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS
Wrought with the death of one of their own and enough legal troubles for three bands, Dayton, Ohio’s finest are poised for a Victory-ous return.

NORMA JEAN
Divorce, kidnapping, cops, drugs: That’s only half the story surrounding the creation of Norma Jean’s most intense album to date.

SPECIALS
THE CLASS OF ’98

It’s time for our annual look back at what was going on a decade ago, exploring 10 classic albums that shaped the punk of today, including influential records from At The Drive-In, Jets To Brazil, Braid, Alkaline Trio, Hum and more. But that’s not all; we had members of Underoath, Deftones, Against Me!, the Rocket Summer, Bayside and others pledge their undying love to these classics.

SECTIONS
INCOMING: LOVE LETTERS, HATE MAIL & SOUND ADVICE

OPINION
Ben Brewer of the Exit/Green Owl Records talks about going green for a good cause in Op-Ed; and everyone from Person L to Atreyu (and you, of course) tell us if pot is really a big deal in the AP Poll.

NEW RELEASES
We preview albums from Lagwagon, Bayside and more; and In The Studio checks up on Fear Before The March Of Flames, New Found Glory and Plain White T’s.

WIRETAPPING
When you’re just starting out in the music industry, you need all the advice you can get. You can take that advice from your unemployed Uncle Frank (whose band once headlined a rib cook-off) or you can read our AP: DIY section. This month, we’ve got tons of backstage/offstage tips from members and crew of Pierce The Veil, Scars On Broadway, Protest The Hero, the Audition and the Matches. AP&R introduces you to eight unsigned bands who may not stay that way for long; Chalkboard Confessional talks inspiration with Matt Pryor; and Suicide Squeeze gets the Label Profile treatment.

AP RECOMMENDS
Do you like to know the “next big thing” while everyone else is jocking the last big thing? Then you need to familiarize yourself with Hit The Lights, Torche and I Hate Kate immediately.

AP STYLE
Style is as style does-AP just provides the road map. This month, get the lowdown on Converse as they celebrate their 100th Anniversary, plus check out the perfect back-to-school outfits and some essential locker-stuffers.

SCREENING
This section is not yet rated, but it does include conversations with Rainn Wilson, Shane West and Sarah Wright, plus info on what you need to see in theaters or add to your Netflix queue this month.

REVIEWS
Forgive the possible allusion to a terrible Robin Williams movie, but there’s been a veritable rush of new additions to the AP Record Store this August, including discs from Underoath, the Gaslight Anthem, Have Heart, the Stills, Valencia, Sky Eats Airplane, Hawthorne Heights, Norma Jean, Ra Ra Riot, Black Kids and more; the shelves stay stocked through In-Store Sessions with Person L, DragonForce, Jaguar Love and the Faint; our classic-rock and classic-punk columns on Edgar Winter and Channel 3 should satiate your historical longings; and Playlist, Collector’s Corner, Readers Chart and Listening Station are our gift to you for being such a loyal customer.

10 ESSENTIAL ALBUMS WITH AWFUL ARTWORK
Everyone has that one friend who constantly gloats about the “beauty of the album” over their MP3-downloading buddies, saying they “just don’t appreciate the full album, man.” (For all of us, it’s our music editor.) Brett Callwood takes it upon himself to fight back on behalf of iTunes users worldwide with this list of killer records-and cover art someone should be killed over for approving.
