The Most Anticipated Albums of 2006: Angels & Airwaves

“The best way to describe this album is that it has taken me 12 years to learn how to write songs like this,” says Angels & Airwaves mastermind Tom Delonge. “It’s taken 20 million records sold and arenas sold out across the world with Blink-182 to learn how music affects people, how it should be presented live and how to keep people interested [while taking] them on a journey.” Big words for the former king of the pop-punk heap; will his new band’s debut continue the style? Apparently not. “The songs are all six minutes long, and [the music] feels like you’re going to cry but you put your fist in the air and you can conquer the world… It’s built on a punk-rock foundation, but it definitely doesn’t sound like Blink. Imagine if you were in a jet plane, soaring through the clouds. That’s what it sounds like.” The band-Delonge, guitarist Dave Kennedy (Box Car Racer), bassist Ryan Sinn (Distillers) and drummer Atom Willard (Offspring)-hope to put a song online before Christmas, with the currently 10-song, 75-minute album following this April-concurrent with the movie of the same name hitting theaters. But that’s a whole other Most Anticipated feature in itself… -Scott Heisel
