Put Zach Hill from Hella and Nick Reinhart from Tera Melos in the same jam space and crazy things are bound to happen. And an unfathomable amount of those crazy things actually do happen on by-, the debut from Bygones. With Hill’s octopus arms on drums, and Reinhart’s ultra-impressive guitar/bass noodling, the sounds are akin to Battles finding a dusty box of death-metal cassettes in the storage space (see the aggro riffs in “Cold Reading”). Other times, the storage space unearths even more of dad’s old Frank Zappa LPs. At its best, this is a cornucopia of extreme weirdness; at its worst, by- is grating, abrasive steel wool for the brain. With the right mood, though, Bygones make for equally impressive headphone zone-outs or complementary background noise for housework. (SARGENT HOUSE) Jason Schreurs
