Street Sweeper Social Club

[2/5]

Karl Marx famously suggested that history is the story of progress, but this superstar pairing of Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello and Coup frontman Boots Riley feels like a step backward instead. Announcing themselves with the lunkheaded one-two punch of “Fight! Smash! Win!” and the eat-the-rich manifesto “100 Little Curses,” Street Sweeper Social Club come on as mindlessly strong as the bureaucrats they bludgeon. Only Morello’s continually inventive solos and Riley’s occasional dark humor redeem the retro-Rage raging; by the time you get to the full-on, faux-disco fun of “Promenade,” however, this would-be revolution has gone as sour as the smell at a G7 protest.
