Singer-songwriter releases track from coming-of-age concept EP

Singer-songwriter Avonlea released a new song from her upcoming concept EP 10 2 17, a collection of tracks that each depict a chapter of her life from ages 10 to 17. The latest single “Again” is in the middle of the EP, and it describes an on-off again relationship that allows her heart to get broken “again and again.”

The lyrics are candid, presented with soft vocals that invite listeners into a part of her life yet again. Previous singles include “It Sucks” and “Cars And Boys,” each chronicling different feelings and moments in her childhood and growth.

“This EP is my past and present,” Avonlea says. “It’s about learning to grow up and into yourself.”

“It Sucks” focuses on the toxicity of one person that Avonlea consistently cares for in her life. “Cars And Boys” tackles the underwhelming feeling of being 16 and not relating to the other people around you, with Avonlea singing about how 16 years old doesn’t feel exactly how it looks in the movies.

In addition to singing, she wrote, co-produced and engineered the entire project. The EP will be released this fall, but the full project is expected to make a 2019 debut.

While “Again” describes a potentially toxic relationship, other songs off the album feature Avonlea exploring her sexuality and role as a feminist. Each song aims to be as open, personal and unapologetic as Avonlea is as she grows through these problems and moments captured in the songs.

“It’s about learning to love other people and yourself in turn,” Avonlea says. “It’s not easy apparently. So the EP is quite somber and reflective.”
