The trend was apparently spearheaded by a serendipitous Instagram post from makeup artist Jacinta Vukovic, which prompted a series of escalating, glittered-out tongues. But, as Dr. Adam Simon tells the Daily Mail, getting that tongue all dazzled out could result in gastrointestinal illnesses.

“Glitter is made of plastic—a substance the body cannot break down—so [it] could cause a stomach ache, constipation or even worse,” says the good doc. “There may also be bacteria on the glitter that could be harmful to the gut if digested, therefore making a person very ill.”

The doctor has spoken. Glitterizing your actual lips is one thing, but going full “glitter tongue” is at assuredly your own risk.
