Gerard Way’s ‘Umbrella Academy’ might be headed to Netflix

Fans of Gerard Way's Umbrella Academy, it’s time to get excited: It might just be getting a series on Netflix, according to Splash Report.

The news site says sources have told them that “The Umbrella Academy will be hitting Netflix” and that Gerard Way “is definitely involved in the project.”

Though Splash Report does not share who their insider source is, they do say that they have been told that the announcement “will come shortly,” even potentially at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

Back in 2014, Comicbook.com reported that the Umbrella Academy comic would actually be a film, with Rawson Thurber writing the script.

However, last fall, screenwriter Jeremy Slater, who was enlisted for both The Exorcist TV series and the Death Note movie for Netflix as well, told Collider he had a pilot written for The Umbrella Academy series.

“I definitely wrote the pilot for The Umbrella Academy,” he told Collider. “I was really adamant about taking the job, but the only way I was going to do it was if I could make it weird and make it true to the spirit of the book. There’s a lot of weird shit in The Umbrella Academy, and it would be very easy to sand down some of those weird edges and make it more familiar to American audiences. I’m fighting very hard to not let that happen.”

He further explained that they were shopping around the pilot, so could it be that it ended up on Netflix? Our fingers are crossed.
