This morning, the nominations for the 2023 Oscars were announced — including the category music fans may care about the most: Best Original Song.

This year, the Academy has honored several pop and indie favorites, including Lady Gaga, Mitski, and Rihanna. Lady Gaga was nominated for her Top Gun: Maverick contribution "Hold My Hand," Mitski was among the names nominated for a song on the Everything Everywhere All At Once soundtrack, Son Lux's "This Is a Life" feat. Mitski and David Byrne, and Rihanna was nominated for what marked her first new release in years, "Life Me Up," from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Other nominees in the category include Tell It Like a Woman's "Applause," sung by Sofia Carson with music and lyrics by Diane Warren and Kaala Bhairava, and M.M. Keeravani's "Naatu Naatu" from RRR, which took home the prize in the same category at the Golden Globes.

As for the Best Original Score category, the nominees include Volker Bertelmann for All Quiet On The Western Front, Carter Burwell for The Banshees of Inisherin, Justin Hurwitz for BabylonSon Lux for Everything Everywhere All At Once, and John Williams for The Fabelmans,

This doesn't mark the first time Gaga was nominated: Her first Oscar nomination dates back to 2016 when she was nominated for, "Til It Happens to You," which she co-wrote with fellow nominee Diane Warren for the documentary The Hunting Ground. Since then, she was also been nominated in 2019 for A Star Is Born's "Shallow," and garnered a Best Actress nomination for the film. As for hit-makers Rihanna and Mitski, though, this sees their first-ever nomination from the Academy. At this time, it's yet to be announced who exactly might be taking the stage for a performance.

The most obvious snub in the category was Taylor Swift, who's Where the Crawdads Sing original "Carolina" saw nominations from Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and even the Grammys, where it was nominated for Song Written for Visual Media.

You can check out the full list of nominees here ahead of the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, March 12.
