Against The Current release "again&again" ahead of new 'fever' EP—listen

Against The Current explore feeling trapped in your own head in their new single “again&again,” featuring guardin. 

Along with sharing the song, the Fueled By Ramen artists announced their new upcoming EP fever, which will include previously released tracks “weapon” and “that won’t save us.” Arriving July 23, the seven-track EP will be the first new body of work from the band since their 2018 album Past Lives.

“again&again” is a call to learn that mental health issues are just as valid and important to address as problems that physically manifest. 

“I wanted to encapsulate the maddening feeling of being trapped in a vicious cycle in your own head,and especially show that just because it’s all in your head, doesn’t at all detract from how real and potent that feeling can be,” singer Chrissy Costanza says. 

This premise of “again&again” is emphasized in the track’s video, where Costanza unlocks door after door only to keep ending up in the same room. She keeps trying to find a different place, but each room is the same until the last one, much like one can feel trapped in their own mind.

With a cold color palette, the visual connects to the song’s emotional uncertainty and confusion. However, the lighting melds into warmer orange and pink tones during guardin’s verse and then for the rest of the song. He is a stark contrast to Costanza’s voice, blending together just the right amount of smooth vocals with the harder elements of his verse.

“We were also really stoked to work with guardin,” Costanza continues. “He completely captured the essence of the song in his lyrics and the raw emotion of his delivery. It was such a blast getting to be the three of us in person again. After ‘that won’t save us,’ restrictions had tightened up so everything we’d done since was remote until this shoot. Though we were able to get creative with the distance, nothing compares to being together in real life again.”

Similar to the emotional tones of “again&again,” fever will see Against The Current touch on many other issues. The work’s title itself is in reference to battling adversity and growing from the pain.

“Throughout our lives we ebb and flow through stages of death, rebirth, growth and so the cycle continues,” Costanza says. “Yet sometimes the metaphorical dying aspect can be quite painful, or we may attempt to prolong the inevitable. Fevers occur when the body is trying to battle an infection, and sometimes our lives become infected as well. This EP is about the fever, burning out the infection within us and around us, so something new can be born.”

“again&again” is the third single from the EP, following rock anthem “weapon” and “that won’t save us.” Produced by Matt Squire (Panic! At The Disco, All Time Low, Ariana Grande), “that won’t stop me” saw Against The Current return to their roots in guitar-driven songs.
