All Time Low confirm return to “upbeat” roots on next record

After a relatively short “break,” All Time Low have confirmed that they are getting back into the studio. In an interview with NME, frontman Alex Gaskarth, who is also currently doing work with superduo Simple Creatures, says that his original band’s new material is sure to take on their signature, upbeat style.

Additionally, Gaskarth says that while he and the rest of All Time Low intend to take things up a notch, they also plan to incorporate what they learned on their last release, Last Young Renegade.

Some of my favorite songs that we’ve ever written are on that record, but maybe what it didn’t provide was a lot of the fast pace and tempo that a lot of people are used to,” Gaskarth tells NME.

“When I look back and think about it critically, there wasn’t a lot of ‘party music,’ that our band has normally been known for. That record was a little more tame and mellow, so we want to take what we learned from Last Young Renegade and maybe make it a bit more upbeat. We want our next record to be more energetic and indicative of the mosh pits that we came from.”

However, while the forthcoming record sounds like it’s all planned out, Gaskarth says new material is still in its beginning stages. That said, according to Gaskarth, ideas regarding their direction and visual elements are certainly beginning to flourish.

Recently, Simple Creatures recently released a new song called “Adrenaline.”

“This is the first fully up-tempo song we wrote for the project,” Mark Hoppus says. “We kind of shied away from the feel and the vibe, I think, given that anything fast or super energetic suddenly felt like we were stepping into too much of familiar territory.

“But this is the first time we kind of wrapped our heads around it and figured out how to do it in the land of Simple Creatures,” he continues. “And it kind of, it mixes a bit of that new-wavy ’80s synth driven feel with something very gritty and modern and dirty, which was kind of the ethos of the entire project.”

You can listen to the track below.

The duo confirmed their first EP, Strange Love, will be released on March 29 with preorders available now digitally and with merch bundles.
