More on The Nightmare Before Christmas
At the end of October, legendary film composer Danny Elfman returned with his first solo song in 36 years. A regular collaborator of Burton’s, Elfman is behind notable soundtracks such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands.
Fans of Elfman’s work were excited to see him among the lineup for Coachella 2020, which was announced in January. However, following growing concern around the coronavirus in March, the festival postponed from April to October 2020. Less than three months later, Coachella canceled 2020’s event with plans to return for April 2021.
Those who were hoping to see the composer in the desert weren’t left disappointed as he released “Happy.” The track marks his first piece of music under his solo moniker since his 1984 debut album So-Lo.
“I originally wrote ‘Happy’ to perform at Coachella 2020,” Elfman says. “It was written to be an absurd anti-pop song, designed to begin as a very simple pop tune that degrades into something more subversive. The cynical nature of the lyrics echo how I feel about living in a semi-dystopian world turned upside down.”
