Twelve long years after Breaking Dawn was published, making us smile and cry in equal measures, the newest literary installment in the Twilight franchise, Midnight Sun, brought us all back to our Twilight phase. With that book, we were finally able to see the events of the first novel through the eyes of teenage vampire Edward Cullen instead of Bella Swan. But there’s one factor that will forever divide the book’s fanbase: Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Fifteen years after publishing the first Twilight installment, Edward’s perspective on the events that transpired arrive via Midnight Sun. However, the release of the novel has not been without issue. Thwarted in 2008, chapters of the book were leaked online, forcing author Stephenie Meyer to put the release on hold. In 2015, the author revealed that work on the follow-up had recommenced, and the book finally released in August.
Meyer suggested the new novel could change readers’ established opinions of some characters. It also allowed for embellishment on an iconic Twilight scene through Edward’s eyes. Tied to narrating the same events from a fresh perspective without altering the original sequences, Meyer also detailed the changes she would make if she weren’t bound to the original Twilight timeline.

“Part of the struggle of writing [Midnight Sun] was there wasn’t much room for me to readdress and to make changes,” Meyers tells The New York Times. “I’ve been locked into the story. I knew what Edward was thinking and feeling [when I was writing Twilight]. So for me there aren’t a lot of surprises, and I wish that there was more room for changes.”
The one change Meyers admits she would have made is having Edward profess his love for Bella earlier in the story.
“He definitely would have after he saved her in Port Angeles,” she explains. “He addresses that mentally where he is kind of surprised, as he thinks over their conversation when he’s talking to her again, that he didn’t say it. He’s like, ‘Oh, is she not aware?’ But still, I feel like if I had the freedom to rework it instead of just telling his side, there would have been some fun changes.”
Twilight fans, known as Twihards, are impatiently waiting for news of whether the Midnight Sun narrative could reach the silver screen just like its predecessors and, if so, who would appear in those iconic roles.
