Apple confirms it’s acquiring Shazam
Apple announced today they are purchasing music recognition app Shazam. TechCrunch reported the company released a statement noting "Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users." The purchase is rumored to have cost $400 million.
Apple also added it has "exciting plans" and are looking forward to combining the two services: "Since the launch of the App Store, Shazam has consistently ranked as one of the most popular apps for iOS. Today, it's used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, across multiple platforms."
Shazam has 175 million active monthly users around the world according to Bloomberg. TechCruch reported it has been downloaded over one billion times.
Shazam has already been integrated with Siri since 2014, which means iOS can ask what song is playing in the background and they will have the audio captured by the digital assitant matched with the app's database.
