Underoath talk hiatus, reunion, friendship and band history at Self Help

APTV Nick Major caught up with newly reunited Underoath at the third annual Self-Help festival in San Bernadino, California.

Underoath’s Spencer Chamberlain and Aaron Gillespie spoke about the band’s triumphant return and what motivated them to get back together.

“I think it just takes time, its like friendship, you know, it's hard to be a kid on tour and grow into a man,” Chamberlain says. “We did this because we love each other, and we needed to take a step back and get our heads right.”

The conversation gets real when Major asks the burning question in every fan’s mind: Is new music in the works?

“I think only time can tell, to me it sounds insane if we didn't write music. If we release it or not who knows, but as of right now we’re focused on being a family being friends being a band and this tour,” Chamberlain says.

Gillespie describes the situation as the foundation still being wet and being in the process of rebuilding. However, the band is open to the idea.

“We’re not just coming to do some tour and disappear again, that’s stupid. We lifted the hiatus, and everyone’s happy. We’re just really focused on that right now and keeping everyone together,” Chamberlain explains.

The guys talk about the intimate club shows the band has been surprising fans with upon their reunion.

“We love playing big shows and all that, but I think we’re best seen in the chaos. That’s kind of how we came up, and that's kind of what we do,” Gillespie says.
