Mini-review/video: A slice of Fucked Up's 12-hour show

I attended a portion of Fucked Up‘s free 12-hour show that took place in New York City yesterday.

My friend and I arrived at a quarter to 5. It seemed as though the band was just ending one of several intermissions they took, which all seemed to last no more than a half-hour. We were both given free 7"s at the admission to the Rogan store (a boutique shop across the street from where CBGB used to be); it’s actually a split with fellow Canuck Katie Stelmanis. Fucked Up does "Royal Swan" on the A Side and Stelmanis has "I’m Sick" on the flip. Supposedly these were only available at the show, and were in limited quantities. I’m shocked none are on eBay yet.

They gave out free Colt 45 tallboys assuming you were of drinking age, too. And if drinking in the afternoon wasn’t your bag, you could grab a small Vitamin Water instead.

In tune with the band’s hardcore base, the stage was a makeshift, broad platter of wood about five inches off the ground. No barrier, of course.

They then kicked into a few off Hidden World, including "Manqueller Man" and "Triumph Of Life." After that and maybe a couple other songs, Moby walked out behind the curtain hanging behind the band.

Yep. Moby.

Fellow blogs, zines and of course hardcore kids are quick to point out that the electronic whiz kid was actually brought up on punk/hardcore — his first band was the early 1980s hardcore act Vatican Commandos, and though it’s not entirely confirmed anywhere, he supposedly sang for Flipper a bit.

Moby picked up a guitar and rocked the shit out of Minor Threat ("Minor Threat"), Ramones ("Blitzkrieg Bop") and Wire ("1 2 X U") covers. Needless to say, it was awesome, and naturally, "Blitzkrieg Bop" got the best reaction. As you can tell by the video below, Moby was having a blast, as Colt 45 splashed everywhere and would-be pile-ons were dismantled by a frowning staffer.

We left at 6 (the band’s next intermission) to have falafel and shop at the Generation record store, with the intent of coming back. But after waiting for 25 minutes in what was now a line that had formed outside and around the corner, we left to go see Dillinger Four in Brooklyn (a pretty fair exchange).

Reports indicate that not all of the band’s special guests showed (no Akon, Ghostface Killah or David Cross, unfortunately). However, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig showed up to provide vocals for Ramones, Descendents and Blitz covers (would’ve loved to see the Descendents one), while Les Savy Fav’s Tim Harrington dropped by to front covers of Agnostic Front and Underdog. Other attendants included Cro-Mags’ John Joseph and Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis.

If you attended or want to provide some more information on what else went down (because, frankly, was anyone really there for all 12 hours besides the band?), let us know.

On a final note, now that Dillinger Four’s Paddy Costello has shaved his head, I think Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham has a potential stunt double.
