BABYMETAL become first Asian act to top Billboard Rock Albums Chart

BABYMETAL made history this week with the Billboard charts. The metal act became the first Asian artist(s) to hit number one on the Top Rock Albums Chart with Metal Galaxy.

BABYMETAL’s previous album Metal Resistance topped out at number six. Billboard created the Top Rock Albums chart 13 years ago.

Metal Galaxy currently sits at #13 on the Billboard Top 200 charts. The fact that Metal Galaxy is sitting this high must be a relief as this is the first effort by BABYMETAL without Yui “Yuimetal” Mizuno, who left in 2018.

Su-metal has opened up to Kerrang! About how special Yuimetal is to her and Moametal and what it’s like for them to perform as a duo.

“Yuimetal has been someone very special to us. So obviously it’s been very difficult, but we want to fully support what she wants to pursue,” Su-metal said.

Su-metal also talked about why they haven’t officially replaced Yuimetal and decided to use background dancers instead of adding a new member.

“We wanted to continue BABYMETAL and continue the tradition,” Su-Metal said. “Also there’s just no-one like Yuimetal, so it’s not an easy replacement. And that’s why we decided – Su-Metal and Moametal – to form the core of BABYMETAL.”

The band’s producer Kobametal said it was the two core member’s drive that helped BABYMETAL overcome the difficult period.

“Yuimetal’s departure was something that they’d never experienced before,” he said. “It was a difficult moment for BABYMETAL, but it was more that Su-Metal and Moametal had their strong desire to continue. They wanted to become the core of the group. I think it was a time BABYMETAL continued to evolve.”
