Billie Eilish's new Guitar Songs EP is a sweet, sad surprise

Billie Eilish has released a new surprise EP, Guitar Songs. Its two songs, titled “TV” and “The 30th,” were produced by FINNEAS, who also aided Eilish in the writing.

Eilish and FINNEAS premiered “TV” during a concert in Manchester in June.

Both tracks are wreathed in a delicate sadness. On each, Eilish conveys tragedy not with any sense of bombastic grandness but instead with an understanding that even the most damaging events can be viewed from a veil of emotional distance. Her detached delivery betrays a familiar tiredness — one that sets in after one disappointment too many.

Eilish revealed she was eager to release the new tracks as soon as possible in a recent statement.

“FINNEAS and I really wanted these to be yours as soon as possible,” Eilish says. “So here they are!! Performing ‘TV’ on tour was such a highlight for us too, so we took the audio from the first night we played it in Manchester and put it in the song. I get shivers every time I hear it. Hope you love the songs and thank you for letting us share our music with you.”
