Billie Eilish explains meaning behind “wish you were gay”

Billie Eilish has explained the meaning behind her latest single “wish you were gay.”

The artist dropped the song on Monday after teasing a clip of it on Instagram for fans.

Last July, Eilish posted about the then-unreleased track and the real life events that inspired the track. You can see the video over at Pop Buzz.

“I wrote this song about a guy that really was not interested in me and it made me feel horrible, so the song is called ‘Wish You Were Gay’,” she says in the video.

That makes sense, considering in the song she sings, “To spare my pride/To give your lack of interest an explanation/I’m not your type/ Maybe I’m not your preferred gender orientation.”

Eilish also posted that for the first 48 hours that the track is out, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is an organization that focuses on suicide prevention in LGBT+ youth.

Eilish has also already released “bury a friend,”  “when the party’s over” and “you should see me in the crown” as singles from the record.

Recently, Dave Grohl praised Eilish, comparing her fandom to that Nirvana experienced in the ‘90s.
