Malerman’s 2014 novel Bird Box was adapted by Netflix and premiered onto the streaming service in 2018. The film features various actors including Sandra Bullock, Machine Gun Kelly, Trevante Rhodes and John Malkovich. Nine Inch NailsTrent Reznor also helped create the film’s soundtrack. Following its release, Bird Box quickly received the most first-week streaming views than any other Netflix Original film in history.

A year after the film’s debut, Malerman announced that a sequel in the book series is on its way titled Malorie. So far, we know that the sequel follows the story’s lead character after she found safety in the last book. As well, the book is set 12 years in the future which means that Malorie’s children are now teenagers. Readers will also get to know more about the creatures in the post-apocalyptic world in the new book.

Now, nearly a year after the sequel’s announcement, Malerman has also revealed that Netflix is in the process of adapting Malorie into a film. The author confirmed the news to Inverse, but left out any key details regarding the new film.

“I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development,” he says. “Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”

Despite Bird Box‘s success, the film also sparked some controversy following its release. Shortly after the film hit Netflix, various fans took part in a Bird Box challenge. As part of the challenge, some drivers drove with blindfolds on while one YouTuber walked into traffic blindfolded. As well, viewers of the film and even Canada condemned Bird Box for its use of real-life disaster footage. Following the complaints, all of the disaster footage was removed from the 2018 film.

At this time, no information on when filming for the Bird Box sequel will begin has been shared. As well, it has not been confirmed if Bullock is reprising her role as Malorie.

The Malorie synopsis is available to read below. The new book arrives July 21, 2020.
