Brand New 2015 new size

Unreleased Brand New song mysteriously appears on reddit

An unreleased Brand New track surfaced on reddit at the close of 2018. The band haven’t released anything since sexual misconduct allegations were made against frontman Jesse Lacey in November 2017.

Brand New dropped a full-length, Science Fiction, in August 2017, marking their last official release. Prior to the public allegations, the band began referencing the end of the band back in 2015.

The band then released a T-shirt with an upside down cross on it and text reading “Brand New 2000-2018” in June 2016. The same design had also begun appearing on the band’s stage backdrop, as seen below, and they confirmed their 2018 end in Oct. 2017.

Now, in a somewhat fitting move, an unreleased track appeared on reddit Dec. 31. The track is allegedly a demo prior to their 2006 release, The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me.

User BN2018SimpleMan posted in the Brand New subreddit with a link to the track. The original post has since been deleted, but user Besthookerintown took a screenshot and uploaded it, which you can see below.

“Thought this should see the light of day,” BN2018SimpleMan writes. “Pre Devil And God era. I don’t know if redemption is possible. Or if it should be. Bad people can do good things. Good people can do bad things. Maybe one day we’ll all get some closure.”

Many users speculated whether or not this was a member of the band, but the user who posted under BN2018SimpleMan assured it wasn’t, responding to the screenshot post:

“Not Brian, or any other member of the band. Don’t mean to start drama for them or between them. Just a fortunate fan who came across it. Signing off.”

Another user, Envy_onTHE_Toast, started a new thread regarding the track, stating it was uploaded as “simplemanmix1.”

There’s also speculation this is actually a song called “Lazy,” an unreleased track the band have referred to previously. User deadbabieslol posted an uncredited interview excerpt in which Lacey talks about the aforementioned track:

“When Vinnie showed me ‘You Stole,’ I just thought that was the coolest thing I ever heard. Even some songs that didn’t make it on the record, like this song that Brian [Lane, drums] wrote we call ‘Lazy.’ When he brought that, at the time I was like, ‘This has to go on the album.’ And there’s days that I think it should have been there and there’s days that I don’t think it would have worked the right way. But I just remember hearing it and thinking I never would have though[t] to write that.”

From there, as seen above, user fcksnapple pointed out that Lacey’s wife, Andrea King Lacey, was posting on her Instagram story about old demos in November 2018.

In it, she captured a photo of Lacey, stating, “Listening to songs my husband & his band wrote 15 years ago and having my mind blown. So fucking good.”

Whether or not this demo is one of the ones Andrea is referencing is unclear.

AP reached out to Brand New’s team for confirmation or comment but have not heard back. This post will be updated should a response be received.

While the original post with the download link has been deleted, a few users have uploaded the track to YouTube. You can check it out below.
