Brendon Urie explains the heavy Brand New influence on 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out'

Did you know Brand New had a pretty hefty influence on Panic! At The Disco’s debut album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out? According to frontman Brendon Urie, the song “Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off” is the band’s version of Brand New’s “Sic Transit Gloria.” “One night, we were listening to Brand New’s Your Favorite Weapon, and it was just interesting to us. What’s the story behind “Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off”?

The title is from Closer, which is just an awesome movie. Natalie Portman’s so hot in it. We were just all 17-year-olds like, ‘Oh my God, we got to pull off something crazy. One night, we were listening to Brand New’s Your Favorite Weapon, and it was just interesting to us. They had such a unique sound. We wanted to copy a couple of their songs, and it turned out to be pretty fun because that was a cool trick we learned early on: Here’s a song that we like, let’s try to do our own version. So, “Lying…” was just us trying to copy Brand New’s “Sic Transit Gloria.” Yeah, we ended up trying to copy Brand New. [Laughs.]
