The popular ’90s TV classic will soon find its way back to your TV, with original series creator Joss Whedon onboard to executive producer and writer Monica Owusu-Breen set to write the reboot’s script.

Breen’s previous work includes Agents of SHIELD, Charmed, Alias, Brothers & Sisters, and Fringe.

While no network is currently attached to the new series, it is in development at 20th Century Fox Television.

The original Buffy series was based on the 1992 film by the same name which was written by Whedon and starred Kristy Swanson as Buffy. The rebooted series will feature a black actress in the starring role made famous by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the 1993 original TV series.

Producers are describing the reboot as “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original.”

“Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.”

The original series ran for seven seasons and 145 episodes and was praised for the way it challenged gendered stereotypes and for its portrayal of Gellar as a feminist hero.
