‘Captain Marvel’ has biggest-ever opening weekend for female-fronted film

Captain Marvel has made even more history with a $153 million box office debut weekend in North America and $455 million worldwide.

The film has now had the biggest-ever opening for a female-fronted film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Captain Marvel took the title from Beauty and the Beast which grossed $357 its opening weekend. It is now also the second-largest opening weekend for any superhero film behind Avengers: Infinity War at $640.5 million.

As far as Marvel films go, the film had the seventh biggest debut for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is behind behind Iron Man 3 ($174 million), Captain America: Civil War ($179 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191 million), Black Panther ($202 million), The Avengers ($207 million),and Avengers: Infinity War ($258 million).

Captain Marvel was projected to have the second-highest debut for a Marvel origin film. It was projected that the film would pull between $145 million and $155 million, which was true.

The box office success comes after Captain Marvel was bashed by trolls on Rotten Tomatoes before it even came out. However, the film’s rating is steadily rising from the online hate and getting a better rating. Critics have boasted rave reviews in regards to the film despite the online hate.

The film stars Brie Larson as the titular character in Marvel’s first ever female-led superhero film.

While it’s obvious this is the studio’s first female-led superhero film, women are also making waves behind the scenes. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are co-directing, and Boden is Marvel’s first female directors.

In other news, Captain Marvel features some of our favorite ‘90s tracks from artists like Nirvana, Garbage and No Doubt.

Also, the movie has an adorable tribute to Stan Lee that will bring viewers to tears.
