Chadwick Boseman and Trent Reznor among 2021 Golden Globes winners

Sunday, Feb. 28 was the 2021 Golden Globes and quite a few familiar faces went home with awards.

Nine Inch NailsTrent Reznor and Atticus Ross took home an award for the Disney film Soul. Meanwhile, Chadwick Boseman won a posthumous Golden Globe for his moving performance in Netflix‘s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. As well, the awards show made history in the Best Director category for a few reasons.

2021 marked the first-ever bi-coastal Golden Globes ceremony as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took on the hosting duties in New York City and Los Angeles.

This year marked some big wins for streaming services. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video, took home two awards for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Sacha Baron Cohen‘s starring role.

In typical Borat fashion, Cohen used his speeches to talk about the political climate in the United States. He briefly explained why he decided to release the movie before the 2020 Presidental election and thanked Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump‘s attorney, for his unforgettable appearance in the film. He even thanked the “all-white” Hollywood Foreign Press who recently came under fire for their lack of diversity.

“Thank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press,” he says. “I’ve got to say this movie couldn’t have been possible without my co-star, a fresh new talent who came from nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius – I’m talking of course about Rudy Giuliani.”

Chadwick Boseman won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on behalf of the Black Panther star who passed away from colon cancer last year.

“He would thank God [and] would thank his parents [and] would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices,” she says. “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you, ‘You can,’ that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history.”

She goes on to thank Boseman’s co-stars, mentor Denzel Washington and more in the speech.

“I don’t have his words,” she continues. “But we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love, so thank you HFPA, for this opportunity to do exactly that. And, honey, you keep ’em coming. Thank you.”

Nine Inch Nails’ Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor were nominated in the Best Original Score category twice this year for Disney’s Soul and Netflix’s Mank. Ultimately, the duo, and collaborator Jon Batiste, took home the award for Soul. Soul also won a Golden Globe over the weekend for Best Motion Picture – Animated.

This latest win marks the second Golden Globe award for Ross and Reznor. Back in 2011, they won the Best Original Score category for their work on The Social Network. Over the years, their scores for Gone Girl and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo have also been nominated.

In his acceptance speech, Reznor expresses his gratitude for being part of a theatrical project his kids could actually see.

“Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press Association, it really means a lot,” he says. “Also, I think this is the first piece of art I’ve ever made in my life that I can actually show my kids so thank you Pixar.”

Over the years, Trent Reznor has appeared on eight different Alternative Press covers. He first appeared on the cover of AP with Nine Inch Nails back in 1990. Since Issue #31, he has appeared on various other covers and currently holds the record for the second-most AP cover appearances. Currently, Andy Black of Black Veil Brides holds the record for most cover appearances.

Along with all of this, Chloe Zhao became the first Asian woman to win Best Director at the Golden Globes. Her film Nomadland also won Best Motion Picture – Drama. 2021 marks the first year three women were nominated in the Best Director category at the awards show.
