The American Music Awards (AMAs) happened last night, Oct. 9, and the winners of the pop/rock category of the award show confused people.
This year, the category for ‘favorite duo or group’ saw the likes of Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5 face off. But interestingly enough, Migos, a rap group, was also nominated for the award.
And, yes, they won.
Sirius XM host Eddie Trunk took to Twitter to voice complaints about the vote and for “rock music being treated so cluelessly and disrespectfully” in award shows.
“It’s sickening, disgusting and offensive,” he offered.
So sick and tired of rock music being treated so cluelessly and disrespectfully by EVERY mainstream awards show. It’s sickening, disgusting and offensive. @AMAs took it to new lows last night #AMAs = American Pop & Hip Hop Awards . Fucking joke .. https://t.co/nJTzrrDcuc

Producer Jay Ruston retweeted the post, noting that magazines and awards focused on the genres existed to “properly acknowledge rock and metal artists.”
I guess this is why we have Loudwire, Metal Hammer and Classic Rock award shows to properly acknowledge rock and metal artists. https://t.co/K7ZC7bFCaD

That’s when Taylor joined the conversation, answering a question a fan asked Ruston.
“Why are rock and metal ignored?” The fan asked.
“To them, real rock/metal is: neanderthal, low brow, common. Too much attitude,” the musician offered. They can’t control us.”
They know it makes money. But to them it’s dirty money. To them, real rock/metal is: neanderthal, low brow, common. Too much attitude. They can’t control us. They can’t use us to sell Pepsi. So fuck the industry. They’ll burn soon anyway… they always do. https://t.co/y9oCqTQv7I

Another follower joined the conversation, asking, “Don’t you have a Grammy? I mean, plenty of pop artists are disruptive and plenty of metal artists capitulate to “the man” or whatever.”
“We got one back when there were actual rock/metal bands nominated and winning. But that was only one of two categories they’ve allowed us to have,” Corey explained.
“Now they’ve whittled us down to one category,” he continued. “And nominate bands/acts that have no business in it, sometimes.”
