'Cosmos' rebooted with host Neil deGrasse Tyson, producer Seth MacFarlane; watch epic first trailer

Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, the seminal 1980's series which helped science-geared television programing reach mainstream appeal, will see a 2014 reboot for a new generation, with the sequel series Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey.

Hosted by famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and produced by Seth MacFarlane (of Family Guy fame), the new series will air next year in primetime on FOX, and will aim to use its platform to tell the story of the universe, while recapturing the mass appeal and accessibility of its predecessor.

Carl Sagan, host of the original 13-episode run of Cosmos, passed away in 1996. Since then, ongoing going efforts have been made to resurrect the series, which originally began airing on PBS in 1980, and was eventually viewed by over 400 mil people across the planet. The reboot found an unlikely ally in the form of Seth MacFarlane, a fan of the original. He used his influence to help deGrasse Tyson, along with Sagan's widow Ann Druyan, secure not only a deal to produce the show, but a prominent placement on FOX's upcoming schedule.

Set to run for 13 episodes as well, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, will employ modern special effects and computer animation, while retaining the spirit of Sagan's original.

For its part, FOX recognizes Cosmos not for its earning potential, but for its potential to have cultural impact. The premiere date for the series has yet to be set, but it is expected to beginning airing next spring.
