Dave Grohl will play his 23-minute song live in concert
Earlier this year, Dave Grohl dropped a two-part mini-doc called Play that featured an epic, 23-minute instrumental composition by the Foo Fighters frontman. Not only that, but Grohl played every instrument on the song himself. Now, he’s planning to rock that same piece of music live in concert this December…with a little help, of course.

To be accompanied by special “friends” for the performance at Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam in Asheville, North Carolina, Grohl will unfurl the full instrumental odyssey for the first time in a live setting at the annual charity concert held by the namesake Allman Brothers guitarist. (But there’s no word on who those “friends” might be, notes SPIN.)
The 23-minute original composition was composed by the Foo Fighters leader to demonstrate the shared obstacles he and music students experience when learning their craft. The frontman wrote music for seven different instruments and played each one. Check out the full Play video below.
It’s just the latest development in the fast-moving world of cool dad Dave Grohl, who earlier this month reunited his legendary alt-rock band Nirvana at the Foos-curated Cal Jam 2018. With Joan Jett and Deer Tick’s John McCauley respectfully filling in for the late Kurt Cobain, Grohl intimates another Nirvana reunion that could happen soon.
“After we played the [Rock Hall], I considered the idea that, if there was an opportunity, we could do it again,” he tells Kerrang. “…But it’s delicate territory, and you can’t treat it like just another show. It’s very complicated and very special.”
