Dave Grohl revisits the time he felt most embarrassed by his mother

Playing on stage in front of an audience for the first time is a nerve-racking experience for anyone. Even rockstars like Dave Grohl.

But playing early on in your career in a setting you're unfamiliar with because your mom wanted you to is a whole other story.

This is a particular situation Grohl recalls in a recent interview he conducted with his mother, Virginia Hanlon Grohl, who both appeared at the Los Angeles Times Festival Of Books over the weekend.

Grohl's mother is the author of a new book titled From Cradle to Stage: Stories from the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars, which features interviews from moms of musicians like Dr. Dre, Adam Levine, Michael Stipe and others.

In the exchange, Grohl revisits a time in which his mother's support for his rocking abilities led to an embarrasing moment for him.

The polarizing experience took place at a jazz club in Washington D.C. that Grohl and his mom frequently visited. The two remember that although the venue was small, it was always packed with talented and trained jazz musicians—but they also invited guests to join in on the jam.

On what happened to be his mother's birthday, the Grohls made their weekly visit to the venue and Mrs. Grohl encouraged her son to drum with the house band.

“You know what I want for my birthday? I want you to get up there and play the drums,” Grohl remembers her saying. Yet Grohl had only been playing drums for a year, and only had been practicing by hitting his bed and pillows “along to Minor Threat records.”

But staring fear in the face, Grohl entered his name and was called upon to drum along with the group, albeit nervous, considering he knew he had no idea how to drum along with a professional jazz  combo.

“It was my birthday!” Grohls mother exclaimed, as Dave explained how the entire scenario went down. You can watch his hilarious description of the event in the interview below.

Though Dave Grohl's role in the combo was short-lived that evening, his mother was proud nonetheless.
