David Bowie's first demo, thought lost, recovered in bread basket

David Bowie‘s long-lost first demo was recently found in an “old bread bin” by a former bandmate, as reported by Pitchfork. The recording’s of a song by one of the late artist’s earlier groups, the Konrads — listen to a short clip below.

Konrads drummer David Hadfield recovered the rare tape. And he says it contains the earliest known recording of Bowie singing lead. The 1963 demo’s going up for auction via Omega Auctions, where it’s expected to fetch over $10,000.

Recalling the 16-year-old Bowie’s first session, Hadfield says the demo of “I Never Dreamed” was an audition for Decca Records. (He reportedly found the tape at some point in the ’90s, apparently keeping it under wraps until now.)

“So this became the very first recording of David Jones (Bowie) singing 55 years ago! There is no other recording featuring David as lead in existence. Decca initially turned us down, but when they eventually gave us an auction later that year, vocalist Roger Ferris was the lead voice and David sang backing harmonies.”
