'Donnie Darko' director hints that a new sequel might actually happen
Yes. There's already a sequel to Donnie Darko. And yes. Original director Richard Kelly did not authorize it.
S. Darko released in 2009. “I had no involvement. I never authorized it. I had no legal recourse to prevent them from making it. I’ve never seen it,” Kelly says to Independent.

Now, in a new interview with HWV, Kelly answers the “Will there ever be a real sequel to the 2001 cult classic?” question directly.
“I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything,” Kelly says. “Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.”
Kelly was just 25 when he directed Darko, which starred an 18-year-old Jake Gyllenhaal, lots of awesome '80s pop, Drew Barrymore and a super creepy bunny-suit-man-thing.
Kelly continues to the Independent: “I felt like I knew what I was doing and was confident in that, but yeah, it was very stressful because we only had 28 days [to shoot] and you’re under a lot of pressure.
“There’s a lot of people who are looking at a 25-year-old behind the camera and are thinking ‘this kid does not deserve the opportunity’, so you have to overcome a lot of skepticism and a lot of doubt.”
To celebrate the movie's 15th anniversary, it was just re-released with new features and restored film.
