Dumbledore won't be explicitly gay in 'Fantastic Beasts' sequel, says director

The Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them sequel hits theaters later this year, and we're usually really excited when there's new information about it.

However, a new interview with David Yates, the movie director, got us quite confused.

Yates says the film doesn't make it explicit Dumbledore is gay. “But I think all the fans are aware of that,” the director told Entertainment Weekly. “He had a very intense relationship with Grindelwald when they were young men. They fell in love with each other’s ideas, and ideology and each other.”

So, let's get this straight: The movie will follow the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald during their youth, which is precisely when they fell in love. Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts author J.K. Rowling even spoke up about it, claiming, “Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was.”

However, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald will not be explicitly about Dumbledore's sexuality.

Does it mean they won't make it clear Dumbledore and Grindelwald are falling in love? Or that they won't realize they're in love with each other just yet? Will they at least hint at something?

We need more answers and so do fans, who got angry and confused by the news.

Naturally, people started complaining to Rowling herself, who responded via Twitter, suggesting Dumbledore's sexuality will be addressed in another part of the Fantastic Beasts series.

EW notes the writer has previously talked about it, saying that “there's lots to unpack in that relationship.”

“You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man—he wasn’t always the sage…We’ll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned…watch this space,” she explained at a press conference.

So, I guess we'll have to wait and see.
