Hear Evanescence’s emotional guitar-driven anthem “The Game Is Over”

Evanescence are offering another look into their forthcoming album The Bitter Truth. Following the release of their latest song “Wasted On You,” Evanescence have now unveiled the emotional guitar-driven anthem “The Game Is Over.”

The new song is a protest against the societal facades individuals are pressured into every day.

“Wasted On You” showed a more vulnerable side to Evanescence. Now, the band are showing their powerful side with “The Game Is Over.” As singer Amy Lee explains, the new song is all about putting an end to the idea that everything is fine despite what is happening in the world.

“This song is about being sick of the facade,” Lee explains. “The disguises we wear for others to make them feel comfortable, the inside feelings being so different than what we show on the outside to fit within the boundaries of what’s socially acceptable. Or what’s not going to make you unpleasant or too ‘weird’ to be around.”

For Lee, “The Game Is Over” also stands as a reminder to always be authentic and never lock up her feelings.

“‘The Game is Over’ is a promise to myself and out loud that I’m going to be more of my real, inner self on the outside,” she continues. “[And] not lock her up because she can’t be contained anymore. It’s also a prayer to become better, to not feel so messed up, locked up and hurt inside.”

“The Game Is Over” is the second track to be released from their forthcoming album The Bitter Truth which is the band’s first album of original new music in nearly nine years.

Evanescence decided to take a bit of a different approach with the release of The Bitter Truth. They are going to release the album incrementally throughout 2020 to better serve the fans. Back in April, Lee spoke about the recording process and the work that’s left to finish.

“We were recording this music right up until we couldn’t go into the studio anymore, and finished it remotely through file sharing and phone calls,” Lee says. “Tweaking mixes, adding background vocals, creating the video and album art all from home has been like water in the desert for me, my light in a dark time. We are still writing and have a lot more work to do on this album, but this time we wanted to release the songs individually, as we create, to live more in the moment with our fans and our music.”

On Friday, July 3, Evanescence are debuting an iPhone-shot music video for “The Game Is Over.” The video is premiering on YouTube at noon EST and a live fan Q&A with Lee will follow after.
