“Everything must come to an end”–Mötley Crüe promise no reunion tours after 2015

Mötley Crüe have announced the retirement of the band through officially signing a “Cessation of Touring” agreement in Los Angeles today. The band promises to never tour again after the Final Tour. But what does retirement actually mean?

For bands like Underoath, retirement has meant the band members splitting up and working on their own, separate projects.

For the Rolling Stones, retirement has meant a countless number of reunion tours.

But for Black Flag it meant eventually separating into two separate entities. So, is a Black Flag/FLAG situation what the Mötley Crüe are trying to avoid? The statements released with regards to the contract are certainly vague, if not subtle.

“Everything must come to an end. We always had a vision of going out with a big fucking bang and not playing county fairs and clubs with one or two original band members! Our job here is done!!!” says drummer Tommy Lee. Doug Mark of Mark Music & Media Law explains that many bands break up over disagreements, but the Mötley Crüe’s decision is mutual.

The above statement seems to make it clear that the band is actually breaking up, but the legal document that the band members signed focuses not on the status of the band, but, instead, the status of their tours. And even that is a little contradicting.

For one thing, the legal document is the first of its kind and, in addition, states that the band members will no longer be going on any “unauthorized” tours. Who authorizes these tours? Is it the band as a whole? Their manager? President Barack Obama? We don’t know, and are therefore rather skeptical.

But, whether the band has truly reached their end, are simply finished touring, or are using this “unofficial” tour cessation as an incentive for fans to buy tickets to the Final Tour of 2014, Mötley Crüe is the first to ever sign the demise of their band away to a piece of paper.
