Facebook launches Verified Pages

Facebook announced earlier today that it is rolling out Verified Pages and profiles, much like the system already in use by Twitter, Vine, and Google+. As with Twitter, Facebook's verified accounts are denoted by a small blue check mark.

The site stated that “Verified Pages belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists, government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences” and that verification would be “rolling out to profiles as well.” At this time, only a handful of accounts appear to have been verified, and no process for requesting verification has been announced. It is also unclear what constitutes a “large audience,” as verification so far has been seemingly sporadic.

Verification is visible all throughout the site, including in search.

Instagram, which was acquired by Facebook last year for $1 billion, currently lacks a system of verification. However, the photo-sharing app has occasionally been known to ask users to confirm their identity with a photo ID. Facebook launched a similar verified account initiative last year, ahead of its official verification system.
